Oral Health; Overall Health

Oral Health; Overall Health

Oral Health means more than just a bright and confident smile. Poor oral health and untreated oral disease and conditions can have significant impact on quality of life. As we refer to some researches, there is always an association between gum (periodontal) disease and health problems such as heart disease or a stroke.

Further research has shown us that more than 90% of all systemic disease (which engage many organs or the entire body) has oral symptoms, for example swollen gums, dry mouth, mouth ulcers, etc. Disear we treat it as system disease are cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, leukemia, heart disease, etc.

Poor oral health may lead to problems below:

1. Facial and Oral pain

As a reference to the Surgeon report on oral health in 2000, this pain may be mostly caused by infections of the gums which hold the teeth and can possible lead to tooth loss.

2. Problems related to the heart and other main organs

Don’t ignore any mouth infections as it can actually affect major organs. For example, the bacteria of periodontitis will enter blood stream, which bring about the infection of heart and arteries.

3. Oral cancer

Oral cancer can occur if you don’t pay attention to oral care. Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer reported worldwide.

4. Digestion problems

Our digestion actually begins with physical and chemical processes in our mouth. Oral health problems can initiate digestion disorders, and intestinal disease.

5 Simple Steps in Maintaining Good Oral Health

Make it a habit to see your dentist often. Your dentist will search for oral disease symptom and any dental crack. Oral diseases are often overlooked by us as they are unnoticed. Ignoring oral disease may cause grave health problem.

Taking healthy food is good for your oral and general health. We get nutrients from the healthy foods we take; this will help us to fight against gum disease and cavities. Avoid alcohol, snacks and junk food. Those foods contain high sugar and starches. Besides, Vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties and helps strengthen immune system to fight against bacterial infections.

· Check your mouth often

Pay attention to those gum diseases’ warning signs such as sensitive gums, red, puffy, sore, bleeding when you brush your teeth or flossing, and bad breath.

· Don’t smoke

Smoking and chewing tobacco may cause huge damage to your oral and overall health. Tobacco use is a foremost main contribution to tooth loss through gum disease. It may also lead to other severe troubles like oral cancer and heart disease.
