What is “Radiation”?

Don’t be snap by Radiation!

Will radiofrequency from cell phones and communication towers effect human’s health? This is still remaining as a controversy debate today. Scientist and medical scientist can’t really provide sufficient and repeatable scientific evidence to prove that cell phones and communication towers are harmful to human being. However, we/the public are still worry about this. In fact, we are still dubious even with scientific evidence.

First, let us try to understand what radiation really is. According to Medical Adviser's interpretation, radiation is a kind of ‘mobile energy’. Radiation is known as ‘electromagnetic’ in nature. Human are usually expose to natural and man-made radiation. We are almost expose to different kinds of radiation every second; for example, ultraviolet (UV) from the Sun, television, radio waves from TV stations broadcast, or even when we go for X-ray checkout, we are expose to X-ray.

There are two Kinds of Radiation: Ionizing & Non-ionizing

1) Ionizing Radiation
Ionizing radiation consists of sufficient strength which could actually filter and separate Electron from Atom and Molecule; and generate ionization
When ionizing radiation interacts with objects, it will change the chemical reaction in internal objects and damage the biological tissues; including affecting object’s DNA. Gamma-Ray and X-Ray are two very common ionizing radiations.

2) Non-ionizing Radiation
Non-ionizing radiation consists of insufficient strength in ionizing living creatures. It will cause temperature-raising effect. However, this will not cause any long-term tissue damage. Energy in radiofrequency, visible light, microwave’s radiation are all non-ionizing radiation.

Radiation is like Light

Radiation is like a type of light that moves in a straight line. When radiation collides with object, there will cause three circumstances: 1. It will went right through the object, 2. It reflexes, 3. It will be absorb by object.
When radiation leaves its source, its energy reduces. If someone is in the indoor, he/she will receive less radiation as compare to someone at the outdoor; and same goes to leaving the source of radiation.

Human are continuously expose to radiation, the Sun is a kind of radiation that we often seen. The sun emanates infrared radiation, visible light, and UV. Other radiation included cosmic radiation, radioactive materials’ radiation, and radiation that are originally from human body.
Among all these radiation, UV from the Sun is considered as “dangerous”. Long term expose under UV, human skin will be premature aging or burned. This is seen as the incentive of skin cancer. Although natural radiation might be “dangerous” and cause cancer; however these radiations are “not dangerous”, as the radiation levels are very low, so we could eliminate their existence.

How much radiation does a Cell Phone release?

Normally, cell phone has low energy and it is a single-channel two-way wireless radio. It consists of transmitter and receiver. It transfers radiofrequency to enable transmission of information to the stations and acts as a receiver at the same time. The radiation energy is determined by the cell phone battery, it is similar as the energy of one torch light or lower. Radiation from cell phone’s antenna is very low; it might not be able to cause temperature-raising affect to the ears and head tissues. No doubt, it might prevent air circulation and generates heat on the skin if you put phone too close to the ears.

How much radiation does communication station launch?

Communication station of cell phone is also a transceiver. Normally, station has low energy, and a multi-channel two-way wireless radio. Antenna which will cause radiation will be installed on the tower, or installed on the roof of the building. Those equipments must be placed at certain height, in order to provide greater signal coverage.

When you make a call from your cell phone, the cell phone will try to connect to its nearest station, and then it will go through the fixed telephone system. Because the cell phone and station are both two-way wireless radio, nevertheless they both produce radiofrequency radiation in order to communicate, so a person will expose in radiation if he/she stands closely to these two equipments. However, both equipments’ energy is pretty low, so basically the radiation levels are very low.
